In managing resources, critically ill patients may need to be transported out of county to specialist areas that have enhanced capacity to care for them, 999 emergency. Ambulances are too precious of a resource to lose for inter hospital transfer.

Very few private ambulance services are trained or equipped to deal with transportation of critically ill patients.
